 In Western herbalism, horehound is considered an expectorant, laxative, diuretic, diaphoretic, and vermifuge. It is most often employed to treat coughs and colds, especially when combined with phlegm in the chest. It has also been traditionally used as a laxative and to eliminate parasites when taking in larger amounts. Horehound has a cooling action and a bitter taste. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, as a cooling herb, it is considered effective for Resolving Phlegm and Clearing Heat associated with fevers, headaches, and congestion.*
