In Western herbalism, hawthorn leaves & flowers are considered a cardiotonic, and also used for their digestive and diuretic properties. In comparison to hawthorn berries, the leaves and flowers of the plant are higher in flavonoids, which are rich in anticancer, anti inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. They have a warming action, and a sour-sweet taste. The leaves, flowers, and berries of the hawthorn plant are believed to elevate the heart both physically and emotionally; studies have suggested they support healthy cardiovascular functioning and circulation.  Hawthorn leaves and flowers can be tinctured, steeped in leaves, or added to cordials.*
