In Traditional Chinese medicine, cranesbill is considered an astringent herb with a cooling action, and is often implemented to alleviate chronic bleeding and upset stomach. It contains high levels of sulfate tannin, which is responsible for its astringent effects. Cranesbill originated in North America, where it was used by indigenous tribes both internally and externally. It has traditionally been used for skin lesions, dysentery, menorrhagia, and any other mild chronic bleeding.*
