In Western herbalism, Chasteberry is classified as a Blood-moving herb. It has emmenagogue and vulnerary properties, with warming energy and a spicy taste. Traditionally, this herb has been used to reduce sexual desire, as it was believed to promote chastity, which may have influenced its name. In modern herbal medicine, chaste berry is implemented because it is thought to reduce premenstrual symptoms, stimulate progesterone production, and regulate the menstrual cycle. It may be helpful to supplement during menopause. Chasteberry has been found to stimulate the production of luteinizing hormone, which in turn causes a rise in blood levels of progesterone.*
