Western Herbal medicine widely utilized California poppy for its nervine and sedative properties. It can be used as a sedative, relaxant, and pain reliever both internally and externally. It is also known to reduce fever and muscle spasms. Studies have shown that the several species of Eschscholzia all contain morphine-like alkaloids that contribute to its nerve-calming effects. California poppy has a cooling action and bitter taste, and has effect on the Liver and Heart in Traditional Chinese medicine. In relation to the Heart, california poppy is acknowledged as an herb that relieves nervous tension and insomnia; it also may help with mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Traditionally, it is implemented by use of standard infusion or tincture. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding.*
